Sorana Beans – Pistoia Box

Learn more about Sorana beans that are part of the Pistoia Box by Radici Italiane!

Can a historic land of emigration become prosperous again thanks to the determination and collective organization of a community? This is the case in Svizzera Pesciatina, so named because of its similarity to the Swiss country’s mountainous landscapes. At the end of the 1990s, a large group of inhabitants formed a non-profit association whose goal was to promote the Sorana bean.

A local product that is born and grows only here. This is why it has applied for and obtained the Igp certificate issued by the European Union, attesting to its high quality and typicality.

The Svizzera Pesciatina includes ten villages, called “castella,” each with its own particularity. From Vellano to the Pieve di Castelvecchio, from the village of Aramo to Sorana, where the characteristic beans are grown.

The rediscovery of Sorana beans: a current story

In the quaint village of Sorana we meet Rita, who is a member of the Association, whose parents moved to the United States after the war. Born and raised in New York City, she left as a young girl for Italy with the desire to get to know her parents’ native country. She immediately fell in love with these places and decided to move here and participate in the project of relaunch this product. At the time, as Rita tells us, this crop was being neglected because of the lack of labor, due precisely to the major migrations out of Italy.

Roberto, the president of the association “Il Ghiareto”, takes us into a real labyrinth, that of the bean plantations. The plants stand tall above our heads as we observe that the first pods are already sprouting. They will then all be dried and sorted by hand.

“No one was willing to work the land anymore to earn a little money,” Roberto tells us, “but thanks to this project we were able to team up, put our forces together, and propose ourselves as a single productive reality.” A formula that turned out to be victorious.

The characteristic of the Sorana bean is its white color and slightly elongated shape. It is ideal as a side dish for grilled meats and fish dishes. It is best enjoyed with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a sage leaf. The flavor is really so delicate: try it to believe!
