Organic rice – Maremma Box

Learn more about the organic rice that is part of the Maremma Box by Radici Italiane.

When you take the road to the sea from the city of Grosseto, the landscape of rice fields takes shape. A historically marshy area, the original nature of these places favored the cultivation of rice, which needs constant humidity. Today, thanks to the attention placed by new producers, organic rice is produced. No chemicals are used throughout the production process.

We are in the rice fields of Tenuta San Carlo, a farm founded in 1936 by Achille Gaggia, who decided to move from the Veneto to the Maremma, a few decades after the complete drainage of these lands. Ariane, the great-granddaughter, represents the fourth generation. She was born in the United States but decided to rediscover her roots by moving to Italy and running the farm herself.

Ariane explains that the rice harvest is a time of great sharing. Fortunately, it is no longer as tiring as it once was because many of the processes, such as threshing, are carried out by specialized machinery. In any case, natural cycles are taken into account today as in the past. Once the harvest is finished in October, sowing is done in the same month, until in May the rice starts to grow and you are ready for the new harvest.

The Carnaroli variety is a highly prized rice, characterized by a long grain, good firm texture and high starch content. In addition, it can boast excellent cooking firmness, all qualities that have earned Carnaroli rice the nickname “King of Rices.”

The beautiful cardboard packaging is meant to be a tribute to the grandparents, whose work has enabled the cultivation of organic rice where marshes previously reigned supreme. A product that tells the story of the Maremma and the outstanding achievements of its people.
